Burned Prairie

A few weeks ago I went out to the Konza Prairie with Scott for a hike. They happened to be in the process of burning that day, so on some portions of the hike we had to walk through fairly thick smoke. It didn’t make breathing all that fun, but it was pretty surreal and beautiful seeing the familiar landscape engulfed in smoke.

I had such big plans for this image. I had gone out to shoot fully expecting flames (I even brought a cup of water to put them out), but instead the roses just smoked for the most part (even though they had been dry¬†for over a year). I had debated even editing them, let alone posting. But, as part of my growth as an artist I am trying to learn to roll with the “failed” shoots and turn them into something even when they don’t go according to plan. I have been in a huge artistic rut for most of the summer, and this is, in a small way at least, my attempt at getting out of it.

123/365 – The Art of Making Fire

Finally, something I am excited about. I have no clue why I thought of this, but I really like it. I also will be making a stop motion from these, which I am so excited about. I just have to find the time to do it.

I have no clue how I thought of the title either. It just kind of came to me while I was taking pictures and I couldn’t get it out of my head so I figured it should be the title.
