Last Thursday Joy Christiansen Erb came to my school to give a lecture on the Intimate Portrait. Her work influenced the series of self-portraits that I did a couple of summers ago, so I was very excited when I found out she was coming to give a workshop. There was a pretty good sized group there, and we discussed various things relating to portraits and photography for a while. We also did a writing exercise to come up with ideas for self-portraits, which I found very helpful. She then gave us an hour to take a self-portrait, but because I was helping other people (and because it turned out how I wanted it to very quickly) I ended up only taking 5 minutes or so on mine. For being such a spontaneous shot, I was really happy with how it turned out, and felt it conveyed what I wanted it to.
On a somewhat unrelated note, I am going to try to be better about posting here on a more regular basis. I am still producing work, but have been pretty busy and focused on other things. But I feel as though sharing my work here on my blog is important, so hopefully I will be able to step it up. Thank you to everyone who has stuck around lately!
Once again, I had something in mind and it just didn’t work out so I improvised and came up with this. It still conveys a similar idea, so I am happy about that. And I still plan on trying my original idea at some point, I just have some planning to do first, so be on the look out for that! And, I just realized that I did two night shots in a row, oops.
One last quick note. My self-portraits are generally speaking very personal, and have a lot of meaning for me. But I always wonder if that meaning is comes across through the image, or if it is just in my mind that it works. So I am curious to hear some thoughts on my self-portraits and what you think they could mean or represent; please share!
I had been craving some self-portrait shoots for a while now, and tonight I finally had a chance. Plus this was an idea that I had sketched out at the very beginning of summer, possibly earlier, so I am glad I finally was able to do it.
I thought of this one sleepless night a while back, title and all. I had been trying to get together with my friend Susannah for ages so that she could do hair and makeup for me, but we both have been extremely busy. Our schedules finally worked tonight, and so I went over to her house, and she went to town on my hair and then snapped the shutter for me. My hair was (well, is) so big that it got squished while getting into my car. The editing process for this image was almost absurd. It took close to three hours, and went through maybe six different versions before settling on this one.
I have had this idea in my head (title and all) for quite a few weeks, and finally got around to it. More to come for sure, I had a tough time deciding on one.
Also, once again I have entered a contest which requires votes. I would so appreciate every vote I can get, so please, go vote for my portfolio and spread the word to as many people as you can! They have a quick and easy way of sharing my portfolio through facebook and twitter among other things, so get the word out! And of course, thank you so much for all the support everyone!
Goodness this burned my eyes. I am still finding clumps of mascara on my eyeball, hours later.
Sometimes, I feel like the watermark just doesn’t belong on certain images. I left it off this one on purpose because I felt like it destroyed the clean simplicity, and was just a distraction from the emotion I was trying to convey.
Hello again! It has been quite a while since posting here, or at least writing anything in-depth. And the reason for tonight’s post? Here I go again ladies and gentlemen, another 365. I knew I wanted to do another project, but recently I felt like my “photographic vision” was starting to fade and I needed to start pushing myself again. And I feel as though a 52 week project wouldn’t quite be enough for me at the moment.
For this 365 I am going to be setting up certain rules for myself. I honestly haven’t completely decided what these rules will be yet, but I do know that I will be doing at least one self-portrait every single week. Sort of a 365 and 52 week hybrid if you will. I will be figuring out the rest of the rules tonight or tomorrow I suppose, ha.
This evening I finally got the chance to go on a photo adventure. It was the first time in ages I was able to just go out with no destination or specific idea and just shoot. It was so wonderful, and luckily my good friend Danielle was in town long enough to join me. As always we had a hilarious time, and got some awesome shots out of it. More to come from this most likely!
Also, I just shot a wedding on Saturday, so expect pictures from that soon!
Without further ado, here is the first of 365 more pictures from me. Enjoy!
