Colorado Part 2 (on the new blog)

8392webThis post is mostly to serve as a reminder that my blog has moved, and it will likely be the last post here. But, the second part of my Colorado trip is now up on my new blog! Head over to abigailithompson.com/blog to check it out. And, while there, hit the subscribe button on the left side to continue to stay up to date with my work. Drop me a comment or email to let me know your thoughts on the new site or images as well!

Happy Friday everyone!

Colorado (Part 1) + News

I have meant to get a new post up for ages, but graduate school has kept me quite busy. This weekend Scott and I went to visit his parents, which generally means some pleasantly lazy days. Today is no exception, and I am taking advantage of the gloomy, cold day by sitting in a big comfy chair while a fire roars in the fireplace next to me; perfect blogging conditions if you ask me.

Before I get into the images, I wanted to announce some rather exciting news (which is somewhat old news at this point unfortunately). A few months back I finally got a website up and running. I had put it off and put it off because I am too indecisive and couldn’t decide on formatting/organization, but finally bit the bullet and put one together. I am still adding images to build galleries and things may shift around someĀ more, but it is up for your viewing pleasure (I hope). There is perhaps a bit of bad news to go along with this update though. In order to keep things more organized and unified I am going to be switching my blog over to be connected to my website, so soon I will no long be posting here. You can head over there (abigailithompson.com) to follow along though, and I hope you all do!

With that out of the way, let’s get on to the images. Back in the middle of October (almost a month ago at this point, yikes) Scott and I went out to Colorado for a long weekend of climbing, hiking, camping, and a wedding thrown in as well. It was an incredible weekend, and as I slowly got around to editing the images I found myself feeling homesick for a place I have never lived.

Also, don’t forget to head over to the new website and follow along the blog there. There is even a post of moments of light up there that I didn’t post here, so head over to check it out. Happy weekend everyone!

moments of light

Today has been a perfectly gloomy, cool day. I long for days like today, like most long for the sun and warmth. However, I am clearly addicted to light and shadows, as you all can tell from one of my current series. It is days like today that make me love the little moments of light even more though. And as winter slowly creeps up on us, and theĀ light becomes a different kind of beautiful, I find myself being even more attentive to these moments.

moments of light

I haven’t shared images from my phone in quite some time, or from my camera even for that matter. Life has been a bit of a whirlwind lately. But I have been shooting, and have aĀ plethoraĀ of images to share, including lots of my favorite subject. In fact, I have so many of light, that I am going to break it up into multiple posts. So, without further ado, I hope you enjoy these moments of light on this fine Wednesday night.

Little Adventures

When I was in Minnesota in the middle of August I was fortunate enough to spend lots of time with my precious nephew. We spent a day together, along with my mom, which involved a walk to a pier forĀ some rock throwing, eating popsicles, throwing plums into the garden, and playing with water.Ā It was a blast to see this little guy constantly on the move, and I made it my goal to photograph our adventures that day.

Drama In The Sky

I thoughtĀ it might be good to post something other than graduate work (something a bit more simple), so I went digging into my folders for things I had meant to share but never got around to.Ā A few weeks ago (I guess it was back in August, so a bit more than a few weeks ago; yikes time has flown by) we had some scattered storms roll through Manhattan. I sat and watched this one move for a while, enamored by the dramatic clouds and the clear distinction of where the rain was.

7226web 7232webHappy Monday everyone; I hope your week is off to a great start!

Experiments

Presentation has been an issue for me since the beginning of this project. After trying both a luster paper as well a mat paper (almost a printmaking type paper) I have decided that I am not a huge fan of how the prints look on stiff paper. It just doesn’t look right. And so, I have been looking for something lighter and possibly transparent for a few weeks now. I printed some on transparencies, which I think work better in some ways, but I still wanted to test more materials. This week has been the start of those experiments.Ā  Using a light-sensitive dye I exposed negatives of my multiple exposures onto fabric. I have a variety of fabrics at this point, as well as different types of negatives and different ways of applying the dye. It has been a major learning process so far, and I still have lots of problem solving to do, but I’m excited about the possibilities with this.

The first round didn’t go well at all. My images basically didn’t show up at all.

The second round of tests went much better. You can actually see an image somewhat, which was exciting, but I am still hoping to figure out how to get more detail in future tests.

The Cost of Forgetting (part 4)

I recently gathered and painted enough objects to shoot a new color. It was a pretty quick shoot resulting in only a few images, and I’m still wanting a bit more variety in objects, but overall I really enjoy how these turned out.

I also just finished spraying objects with the next color this evening (as you can see below), so I should have some multiple exposure imagesĀ to share this week!

I hope you all had a wonderful weekend!

The Cost of Forgetting (part 3)

Time for the third set of images from my current series. The glass objects are some of my favorite in this series of multiple exposures. I love the distortion that happens, andĀ they have a bit more of an ethereal feel to them in my opinion.

glasscirclefix6623web glasscirclefix6631web glasscirclefix6633webThese are all I have for now, but hopefully this week I will be testing some different materials for display, as well as spray painting some new objects in a different color and shooting lots more. I hope you all had a wonderful holiday weekend!

The Cost of Forgetting (part 2)

Time for a few more images from my current graduate work! If you missed the last post, I would suggest readingĀ it first, so that this post will make a bit more sense. This time around I am sharing the multiple exposures from the white objects. I still have the glass ones to share, and then hopefully by that point I will have a new color ready to photograph and post.
